Frequent Questions
I wrote a Book—will You Carry it?
(A bIG Thanks to Blacksburg books for letting us copy their policy!)
Thank you for your interest in stocking your book with us! Before continuing please understand:
We evaluate hundreds of new books and field many event requests every year. It may take several weeks to respond to your request. Thank you for your patience.
We are receiving stocking requests from authors at an increasingly high volume every day. We cannot handle phone calls or drop-in visits. Our priority is receiving and shelving books and helping customers. Do not leave a copy of the book at the store or send one unless we request it. Unsolicited samples that are dropped off or mailed to us will be donated unread.
Books that we accept by local authors will be carried on a consignment basis. Please review consignment guidelines below and submit the stocking request form.
Guidelines
Due to limited space, our consignment program is only available to local authors, with preference given to authors living in Floyd and the surrounding counties.
If approved, the initial order will be one copy and the consignment period is for 3 months. If that copy sells, we may contact you to bring in more copies. If your book continues to sell well, we may agree to extend the consignment agreement.
Any unsold books will be held for pick-up for 30 days. After that, any unclaimed books will be donated to the charity of our choosing.
If you are interested in having us host an event, we require first that you be accepted into our consignment program and that we are seeing sustained interest before scheduling an event.
We accept consignments year round, except during November & December.
Please Fill OUt this form with your information.
Thank you! We look forward to working with you.
Can you donate to my Good Cause?
Thank you for thinking of us for a donation for your fund-raising event. Please note that we receive a very high volume of donation requests. We would love to support all the individuals and organizations doing amazing work in the world. However, we are a very new bookstore and have very little spare cash at this time.
Our first priority in giving is always for literacy and to organizations that our customers love and cherish. We do not make donations to individuals or families, for-profit businesses, or non-local organizations. If your organization asks for a donation from us, and we are unable to find your board members or staff members in our customer records, we are unlikely to make a contribution to your organization, even though we appreciate the good work that you do in the community.
Our usual donation is a gift certificate for our cafe. We cannot buy advertising, give cash donations or merchandise at this time.
To request a donation please submit the donation request form. We aim to respond within 14 days.
Do you accept book donations?
As much as we appreciate your book donations, we do have guidelines and limitations for what we can accept. There are various reasons for this:
1) We have limited space for storing books! Our entire 4th floor (staff only space) is currently very full of backstock.
2) Not all books will sell- we have developed a keen eye for what will and will not sell, so we understandably will turn away books that will be a lot of work for us with no revenue.
3) We cannot accept musty, moldy, or very dusty books- especially books that have been boxed up and stored in a basement or other area with no climate control. Pests such as mice, roaches, and silverfish LOVE these conditions and we cannot risk introducing these pests into our business.
4) We simply do not have the time!
We are very busy- it’s A LOT of work to keep this business running and we only have a few employees. Accepting multiple boxes of books into our inventory creates many hours of work!
While we appreciate our community's generosity, we must have strict guidelines in place in order to maintain sustainability for our business.
With this in mind, we will require that you call ahead (540) 745-2503 or email floydvabooks@gmail.com and set up a time to bring donations by. If you come by without having first done this, we will not accept your donations. Keep in mind that we may not accept them even after looking through them. In this case, there are plenty of other places to donate to- check with our regional thrift stores. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE BOOKS ON OUR PORCHES!If the books are very old and very dirty, go ahead and throw them away. I know it’s hard to throw books in the trash, but someone will have to do it if you don’t and unfortunately not all books can be saved.
If we turn you away, please be kind to our staff- They are following out guidelines.
We are so grateful for all of the donations that have helped keep us going thus far! Please understand that we are doing our best to bring you, our beloved community, the best!
